This is the larger of the two Rai Chimes we carry. This Rains Wind Chime has seven desert bells.

The seven bells range in size from large to small, producing a beautiful harmony of tones.

Made by Janmamad Luhar in the Kutchchi desert region of western India.

Sheets of recycled steel are shaped and beaten into bells by hand. The seams are riveted, with no welding. The Bella’s are dipped in a copper slurry. Women in the community make a dough and coat the bells to protect them during the firing process.

The bells are then buried under the hot desert sand in a kiln.

The firing anneals the steel and copper into bronze.

Aftee firing, the dough is chipped off and EACH bell is hand tuned by Mr Luhar. His brother and his son also assist in the tuning.

This traditional, age-old technique of metal-work is what gives each piece its unique patina and tone.
